The Khaleej to Masriya, Masriya to
the Khaleej and the others in between 

 

Egyptian incorporates khaleej rhythms (especially in 2/4 rhythms) in today’s music. In this class learn how to properly execute movements within Raqsa sharqi style performance: Cultures from various parts of Africa to Iraq, to south of Iran (Bandar Abbas) and more uses distinctive hair tosses and mannerisms similar to those of the Khaleej. In this class we will go beyond the Khaleej. We will discuss the differences between these regions / cultures to differentiate what is Khaleeji and what is not. I will also demonstrate how to properly approach and execute rhythms specifically in an Egyptian song.

Khaleeji Style: Class focus on KSA

 

True culture and tradition: “Khaleeji” to refer to the style of dance, culture and music from the Persian Gulf or Arabian Gulf region, the “Khaleej,” including Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, (KSA) Saudi Arabia, and the
UAE. The dance is largely improvisational, performed by pairs or groups of women for their own entertainment at special celebrations, such as weddings. As this dance represents many countries of the Gulf region, Khadijah will instruct proper costuming, musicality, posture, history, and background and much more!

Bandari (Afro-Persian dance and musicality)

 

In Farsi vs. Persian language, Bandar means “harbor”. This high energy Southern Iranian folk dance from the Persian Gulf not only reflects on ties from the Arabian Peninsula but from traditional African dances that was brought to the Persian Gulf by the work trade. Come learn abdominal movements and undulations, graceful arm and
hands movements, with shimmies and fun spins and turns!

a weekend of fabulous hip work. Let your hips take the lead with this non-stop shimmy show!

We will work on huge hips and articulation of movement, while exploring lots of different styles of shimmies, and give you new ways of doing them. So whether you are new to Belly Dance, or looking for something to add to your repertoire, this is the workshop for you. It’s all here, 3/4 shimmies, 4/4 shimmies, sharp and smooth shimmies, traveling shimmies, layered shimmies, timed shimmies, and non-timed shimmies…WHEW!  So.. let’s dance!

The art of improvisation (with a dash of practicality)!

 

Tips and tools for every dancer wanting to improve their improvisational game. This workshop will present clear ways to develop your improvisational skills through musicality, phrasing, and take-home practices. The dancer will learn how to utilize phrases of different lengths to bring variety to their solo, how to create a beginning, middle, and end to improvisation, and how to bring these techniques into your practice routine to help make improvisation second nature!

The technique behind her signature locking stylization will be broken down and taught in an easily digestible format. Students will receive many tools to help unlock the more challenging aspects of layering, as well as lots of fun drills in class to get the movements in their bodies. be prepared to sweat!

Learn basic hand strokes for tabla players, the latest Middle Eastern rhythms, and techniques to create a drum solo. Practice Issam’s approach to tabla artistry for consistent sounds, moving volume, and intricate music.

Get to know your Middle Eastern Instruments



Middle Eastern music creates mystery and movement through its many rhythmic instruments. Knowing your rhythmic instruments helps dancers center their movements towards the duff’s pulse, the riqq’s shimmy, and the tabla’s liveliness. Learn how to listen to these instruments in various Middle Eastern music and to play them to better your dancing and be a consistent musician. Understanding the instruments makes Middle Eastern music less confusing and allows dancers and musicians to bring the richness of the music alive without being overwhelming. Learn basic techniques and rhythms for the tabla, riqq (tambourine), and duff drum. Great for musicians and dancers.

As a lover of Latin and Arab dance styles, Sonia has created a perfect blend of movements set to a a romantic and sultry song by Souad Massi, ‘Ghir Enta’.
